Current Wine: 2021 | 2020
Limited Edition: 2021 Art Map Label
Previous: 2019 | 2018 | 2017 | 2016
Vintage: 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011
Saffron Fields Vineyard:
Expertly farmed and managed by Results Partners, it delivers every year, irrelevant of the weather. Situated on a “bench” in a protected “valley” of sorts, this site is comprised of well-drained soil made up of a soil classification known as Willakenzie, a sandy loam with interspersed sandstone underlying the granulated soil. Fully exposed with no shading, it ripens earliest within the EIEIO portfolio of vineyards and makes a strong impression with ripe dark fruit, fully ripened tannins and beautifully balanced acidity as most of the east side of the site is within these bottles.
“Wild and exotic, the 2021 Pinot Noir Saffron Fields Vineyard Art Map Label blossoms with a burst of exotic spices, zests of blood orange, tangerine and hints of sage before settling on medicinal cherries. This seductress is silky-smooth and supple with fleshy red and black fruit depths guided by tantalizing acidity. It finishes juicy, long and potent, with sweet tannins that frame the experience without slowing its momentum.” – By Eric Guido on January 2024 From: Sitting Pretty: Oregon’s New Release Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Beyond (Jan 2024)

– Drink 2025 – 2033
$75 a bottle

The Process and Philosophy:

I fermented each block separately and the followed up by bottling the related fermentations individually, just like I did back in the legendary 2012 vintage, as I do believe that the 2021 vintage will prove to be as good, if not even longer-lived.

I combined the blocks within the “Numbered Clones” bottling which includes the cuttings known as 115, 667, 777 and 943 to make a fruit-forward powerhouse wine as these clones tend to not only ripen earlier but also offer massive flavors.

“The nose is black cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and bay leaf. The palate entry is cool, sleek wet stone with a core of juicy bright plum and pomegranate finishing with well-defined acidity.”
$75 per bottle

I also produced a 100 percent Whole Cluster fermentation with the Pommard Block. I continue to learn more about the results of Whole Cluster fermentation after experimenting for fifteen plus years. The process is counterintuitive as if you only have a one-third or even two-thirds whole cluster fermentation, the resulting whole cluster aspect is overpowering. So odd. Nonetheless, it worked out great this vintage.

“The nose is soaked cherry, dried lemon, and sassafras with notes of herb and blueberry. The palate entry is tightly-focused and sleek red berry with a slipper wax-like core of licorice, plum and pie spice finishing with crushed rock and beautifully-focused herbal acidity.”
$75 per bottle

And I also produced the “Field Blend” and chose the lots from each block which married well to show what I believe Saffron Fields Vineyard represents.

“The nose is briary crisp with notes of dewy citrus and pomegranate. The palate entry is lean, fresh watermelon and crunchy red berry leading to a sleek core of finely-tuned stone nectarine finishing with impeccably-balanced cool acidity.”
