Vivid red. An expansive bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, potpourri and smoky minerals, and a hint of musky earth peeks out. Sappy, alluringly sweet and energetic on the palate, offering intense raspberry, boysenberry and floral pastille flavors that are given nervy cut by a suggestion of blood orange. Plays power off delicacy with a sure hand and shows no excess weight. Fine-grained tannins lend shape to a very long, smoothfinish that leaves a subtle lavender pastille note behind.

This is a best barrel selection of the blocks I lease within the Vineyard, almost all of which are on the east facing side of the bench. The blend melds together to not only produce a sublime wine, but also one showing the consistent terroir of this site: dark cane-fruits, like blackberries and blueberries combined with an interesting salinity.

Upon opening, the wine is quite shy, as it was bottled less than a year ago. Give this at least thirty minutes in the glass and then hold on as it wakes up to show effusive blackberries, black plums and the seaside aroma of cold water oysters. A subtle entry with light texture moves into ripe black-skinned plums. With more time flavors of caramelized orange rind and roasted meats are obvious. The finish is clean and subtle with a bit of dusty blackberries showing up at the end.
