Darkest of the lot. Intense aromatics showing plum blossom, cherries over toasted sourdough bread. Cinnamon toast. Heavy cream just being poured into rich black coffee. Entry is very sexy with a smooth and linear transition enveloping the entire mouth offering fruit flavors of crushed anise seeds in fruit compote. With time, rustic chunky French Country-style pate with cherries, currants and prunes. This is the great “savoriness over fruitiness” aspect that is so difficult to attain. Lush, yet with pinpoint acidity to help delineate flavors. This will be the wine of the vintage. And it even has a finish: subtle and showing cherry pie with burnt crust edges, blood orange jam, red and black plums. No blackberries to speak of. Great wine.

92 Points. Brilliant red. Highly perfumed raspberry, boysenberry, Asian spice and lavender aromas are complemented by hints of allspice and woodsmoke. Silky in texture and gently sweet; juicy acidity lifts the red and dark berry and rose pastille flavors. Nicely concentrated yet nervy. Finishes very long, offering smooth tannins and lingering floral character. – Josh Raynolds

The 2013 Pinot Noir Saffron Fields Vineyard comes from Pommard and Wadenswil clone, plus 777 and 115 clones. There is a pastille element to the aromatics: blackcurrant pastille and strawberry to nail the fruit, a little more showy than the Cuvée “I”. The palate is medium-bodied with supple ripe tannin, fine cohesion, supple and forward with tart red cherry, balsamic and a pinch of white pepper towards the smooth finish. This sleek and lithe Pinot Noir should be drunk over the next 5-6 years. 90 points  – Neal Martin

Saffron Fields Vineyard Pinot noir 2013

Nose of freshly ironed linen, some clean herbaceousness, then a bit of cherry flower blossom. Flavors: mostly BLACK cherries even though nose was RED cherries, laundry fresh out of the drier. GREAT TEXURE, almost too smooth, where is the unctuousness coming from? Wadenswil clone for sure!

Now with time and some Fino in Fondo Tartufo sausage, this thing SINGS! Nice dense flavors of all cherries and all the cherries are black or red. Dense. Excellent mouth coating texture without being heavy as there is some nice acidity in the later part of the wine.

Little darker, bit of cedar and citrus onset, smooth with solid presence. Warm spice, orange zest, meatiness, tar and rubber complexity, complex nose, soft and full on the palate, smooth elegant. waterfall imagery. effervescent on the tongue for finish.

Buxom, most aggressive on the palate, nice amount of smoke, plum and cherry. Demands food. Some salinity macerated cherries, Blue cheese rosemary cherry, Bright onset, mid palate is light, wanted to eat food, meats or apples and roasted nuts.
