Abbott Claim VineyardAcres: 17 Varieties: Pinot noir Year Planted: 2001 Soil Type: Wellsdale, Willakenzie and Peavine, 30 inch depth Clones: Pommard, 115, 777 Elevation: 400-475 ft. Aspect: S-SE AVA: Yamhill-Carlton This site is a portion of the original John F. Abbott Donation Land Claim and lies in the middle of a sedimentary ridge east of the great little town of Carlton. Now owned by Ken Wright, Abbott Claim became one of EIEIO's leased sites in 2008 after losing the Old Block of Canary Hill to phyloxera. The site is a consistent broad face of land with soil depths of 30 inches to mother rock of fractured sandstone and siltstone. Because the sand content is quite high the soil is well drained producing fruit that has lower acid levels and wines that are lush and extremely accessible when young. |
